Customised design potential with
the Digital Printing of Textiles

A unique garment with a customised fabric print was unveiled at a photo shoot on 15 November 2001 in Manchester City Centre.

The garment was designed and manufactured by Jackie Haynes, proprietor of the "House of Haynes" Fancy Dress Hire. It is a psychedelic 70's style high fashion outfit.

Jackie designs, makes and hires her one-off creations from her shop in the Coliseum Shopping Centre, Manchester. This particular garment was designed to explore the potential of textile digital printing technology. She worked with Sidney Jackson of Colourscope, a Hyde-based digital printing company. The project was supported by the North West Advanced Clothing Web, based at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Jenny Hardcastle, a fashion design student in the Department of Clothing Design & Technology, Manchester Metropolitan University, modelled the garment. For more images, click here.

The fabric is a polyester weave and printed with subliming disperse dyes.

The design is based on striking psychedelic swirls and incorporates "house of haynes" within the swirls and a logo.

The principle of having a customised fabric carrying the hallmarks of an individual or a company is eminently transferable. Possible applications are in corporate clothing, costumes for special events and performances, interior design and customised clothing.

Developing the design was not a trivial task, and there was considerable dialogue between the Printer and the Designer before the fabric was printed. Companies wishing to explore the potential of the technology should look for printers with whom they can develop a business relationship: a product development stage should almost certainly be planned in.

Once the design was finalised, printing took place very quickly. There are no set-up costs for digital printing. The fabric was ready for despatch within a few hours.

This product was sponsored by the North West Advanced Clothing Web, an EU-funded project that seeks to support clothing and textile companies in NW England. Digital printing is an emerging technology that the project has supported in several ways, including facilitating the creation of this high fashion outfit.
