Fashion Technologies Research Centre: Introduction

The Department of Clothing Design and Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University, one of the largest in the UK, is a vibrant and exciting centre for clothing research and education with an ambitious structured research strategy. We achieved a Grade 4 in the Research Assessment Exercise and the 'excellence' rating 22 in the QAA Subject Review.

We are interested in collaborative research and have joint projects with several international Universities. We welcome enquires for post graduate study and there are a wide range of opportunities within the areas of performance of textiles for clothing, clothing comfort, international fashion marketing, logistics and supply chain management, CAD/CAM, fashion theory and fashion product development. There are excellent facilities for all these areas.  Post graduate students are encouraged to publish throughout their studies and to disseminate their work at the regular research seminars and conferences.

Strong international academic links have also been made through the development of the Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management published by Emerald. The Editor is a member of this Department and is supported by regional Editors for the Asia-Pacific region and in the USA.

The applied research with companies is undertaken through the ERDF funded Centre and this enables the research to be incorporated into the curriculum.

The Department of Clothing Design and Technology has world class researchers and state-of-the-art facilities available for the research and development of new products.

All research activities at the Department take place within the Fashion Business and Technology Research Centre at the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD).
