International Collaborative Partnerships - the TARSI Project
TARSI Project – Adopting the student Group Consultancy Project in Tourism industries within Lithuania, Sweden and Bulgaria is lead by Utena College Lithuania with its aim to adopt the concept of "Group consultancy projects" within the Lithuanian, Bulgarian ,Italian and Swedish partner institutions. The International Centre in the department of Food and Tourism Management at MMU is a major delivery partner, working with a consortium of other universities as part of the project.

The 2 year project ends in November 2011 and information on the progress of the projects outputs will be published during the course of activities.

2010 was been a busy year for academics and students involved in the TARSI project, a Transfer of Innovation Project financed by the Leonardo Da Vinci Programme.

158900331.jpgMMU and Ca Fascari University in Venice, Italy have worked together to transfer tourism expertise to deliver research and consultancy in Lithuania, Sweden and Bulgaria.

The project, led by senior lecture Susan Moulding has been designed to enhance students' managerial skills and competences through experiential learning.

Susan said: “Students are exposed to ‘real life’ market opportunities like a professional consultant and resolve problems faced by practising managers.”

The project challenges students to work within the dynamics of business and apply theories whilst gaining insights into the complexity of the tourism industry.

The first TARSI seminar took place in December 2009 in Lithuania. This was followed in February by a three day intensive training package for both academics and business representatives. The sessions were complemented by two visits with Susan to meet key business contacts involved with the project, including Manchester City Football Team (events and tourism team) and Kro bar and restaurant (with John Hobson).

Dennis Zalamans, an academic at Sodertorn University, Sweden said: “Susan discussed the educational structure and ambitions of Group Consultancy projects at MMU. It was interesting to hear how MMU works together with businesses, particularly for advisory or consultancy purposes.”

Gustaf Onn, also from Sodertorn University added: “Some of the ideas from MMU have been put into immediate implementation and we have now been able to discuss further ideas for the future.”

The seminars continue in June in Venice, Italy with Susan following up the progress made by participating Universities and getting to grips with consultancy projects in Venice. Susan will meet with local tourism businesses who would be joining the project. Susan said: “Our next meeting will take place in November in Marijampole in Lithuania where we will address the Venice contribution and discuss how to develop professional briefs and maintain an active network of contacts.”
